Kala malam datang dan rasa kantuk membentangkan selimutnya di wajah bumi, aku bangun dan berjalan ke laut, “Laut tidak pernah tidur, dan dalam keterjagaannya itu laut menjadi penghibur bagi jiwa yang terjaga.”,

Ketika aku sampai di pantai, kabus dari gunung menjuntaikan kakinya seperti selembar jilbab yang menghiasi wajah seorang gadis. Aku melihat ombak yang berdeburan. Aku mendengar puji-pujiannya kepada Tuhan dan bermeditasi di atas kekuatan abadi yang tersembunyi di dalam ombak-ombak itu – kekuatan yang lari bersama angin, mendaki gunung, tersenyum lewat bibir sang mawar dan menyanyi dengan desiran air yang mengalir di parit-parit.

Lalu aku melihat tiga Putera Kegelapan duduk di atas sebongkah batu. Aku menghampirinya seolah-olah ada kekuatan yang menarikku tanpa aku dapat melawannya.

Aku berhenti beberapa langkah dari Putera Kegelapan itu seakan-akan ada tenaga magis yang menahanku. Saat itu, salah satunya berdiri dan dengan suara yang seolah berasal dari dalam laut ia berkata:

“Hidup tanpa cinta ibarat pohon yang tidak berbunga dan berbuah. Dan cinta tanpa keindahan seperti bunga tanpa aroma semerbak dan seperti buah tanpa biji. Hidup, cinta dan keindahan adalah tiga dalam satu, yang tidak dapat dipisahkan ataupun diubah.”

Selanjutnya ketiga-tiganya berdiri dan berkata dengan suara yang menggerunkan sekali:

Buah dari perjuangan,

Akibat dari kebebasan,

Tiga manifestasi Tuhan,

Dan Tuhan adalah ungkapan

dari alam yang bijaksana.’

Putera kedua berkata dengan suara bergema seperti air terjun,”Hidup tanpa berjuang seperti empat musim yang kehilangan musim bunganya. Dan perjuangan tanpa hak seperti padang pasir yang tandus. Hidup, perjuangan dan hak adalah tiga dalam satu yang tidak dapat dipisahkan ataupun diubah.”

Kemudian Putera ketiga membuka mulutnya seperti dentuman halilintar :

“Hidup tanpa kebebasan seperti tubuh tanpa jiwa, dan kebebasan tanpa akal seperti roh yang kebingungan. Hidup, kebebasan dan akal adalah tiga dalam satu, abadi dan tidak pernah sirna.”

‘Itulah anak-anak cinta,

Saat itu diam melangut, hanya gemersik sayap-sayap yang tak nampak dan getaran tubuh-tubuh halus yang terus-menerus.

Aku menutup mata dan mendengar gema yang baru saja berlalu. Ketika aku membuka mataku, aku tidak lagi melihat Putera-Putera Kegelapan itu, hanya laut yang dipeluk halimunan. Aku duduk, tidak memandang apa-apa pun kecuali asap dupa yang menggulung ke syurga.
